Why Do I Eat When I'm Not Hungry?

By Kat Beechum This is a fantastic question and one that you need to ask yourself the next time you go to put something in your mouth is "Am I really hungry? Does my body need this right now?" I don't know about you, but I find that if I am bored, sitting around at home doing nothing or doing something boring at work, I automatically reach for something to eat. Now, what I eat solely depends on what I have available in the house or at work and it stands to reason that if I have things like biscuits, chips etc that that is what I am going to go for. Same goes for work. So, why do you eat even if you are not hungry? Well, you know why I do, but there are lots of reasons that people eat even if they are not hungry. Here is a brief list of some of the reasons why you might be eating even if you are not hungry: You are feeling down and eating makes you feel better about yourself for a while, ie, comfort eating.
You are bored and eating is something to do.
You are trying to punish yourself through eating.
Someone is making you eat.
These are probably some of the most common reasons. There are also many medical reasons why you might eat when you are not hungry, but as I am not a doctor, I am not even going to attempt to write about those. So, what can you do about? Do you even want to do anything about it is probably more a pertinent question. Remember, no matter what you might think, you are in control of what goes into your mouth, as the saying goes "you are what you eat" and it is never truer than in this situation. Well, I can tell you what I do now if I am bored, I get out of the house or I change what I am doing at work. I refocus on something else to take my mind of the boredom and if worst comes to worst and I do end up eating something, I make sure that in my house I only have healthy things that I can reach for, so this means no biscuits, no chips etc, especially if you are particularly susceptible to this eating habit. I always have fresh fruit, vegetables and health bars lying around so that they are quick and easy to eat. If I actually have to make myself I meal, then I won't bother, so it has to be quick and easy food that I can access. If you eat because you are feeling down about yourself you can do one of two things. You can keep feeling sorry for yourself and keep having a pity party or you can be honest with yourself and pick yourself up and make a change. Everyone goes through low points in their lives; it comes with living a human life. But the best thing about being human is that you can change your perspective at the drop of a hat. Remember when you were a child and you would get upset over something little, like your ice cream fell on the floor, you would start to cry, feeling as though your whole world had fallen apart and all it took was for your Mum to clean you up and give you another ice cream and you were happy again. And all that can happen in the space of a few minutes! So, it is a matter of perception. There is a fantastic website that can help you get into a different mind space, checkout www.tut.com and sign up for "Notes from the Universe", these are free and WILL make a difference in your life. If you are eating because somebody is telling you to, again, this is your choice. Unless they are holding a gun to your head, no one can make you eat anything you don't want to. If you are in this situation, it is not a healthy one. I know that sometimes it feels like there is no way out, but if you think about it long enough and concentrate on the end result (freedom) you will get there, you just have to have faith in yourself to do this. While there are many reasons why you might eat when you are not hungry, know that you have the power to change this. You can do, live, be whoever you want to be, you just have to make it so. Phew, this has turned into a bit of a long one, but I really feel passionately about this. We all have our vices in life, but it just takes small changes to make a difference. You can do it, I believe in you. Kat Beechum writes about things she is passionate about, which are many and varied. Kat lives in New Zealand with her man and two cats, Cooper and Phoenix, both male.
